What to do with spent fuel?Reprocessing the fuel (like Japan/France) would make the volume of spent fuel waste 1/10th of what it is now and save energy.Spent fuel is primarily composed of two things: fission products and actinides. Fission products are highly radioactive and will all generally decay (more than 10 half-lives) in less than 100 years. The minor actinides are created through neutron capture chains of uranium, are not highly radioactive and have in some cases much longer half-lives.Currently (even with conventional reprocessing which just separates Pu/U from the rest) the 'minor' actinides are just considered waste; however, it is possible to burn these in fast reactors. This would lead to spent fuel waste that is only hot for ~100 years. We just need money and support for research. I've turned around and backtracked over 15 miles before after forgetting my wristwatch.Also, @CBKBAMF, I agree, an analog wristwatch is the only wristwatch worthy of owning.

I noticed that the USA is not on the list of least corrupt either.Americans, I think we can do better than that. Surely we can do better than Iceland.Lets get a balanced budget amendment passed that way douche bags like Bush cant wage expensive, stupid wars and douche bags like Obama cant force nationalization of health care down our throats. The people that lose with a balanced budget amendment are the political class. Those that win are, well, the rest of us. |
